Care-A-Van

The Care-A-Van is a mobile health van that visits neighborhoods of Greater Richmond and the surrounding areas to provide free medical care to the uninsured and under-insured. Staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other healthcare professionals, the Care-A-Van offers free, bilingual services to both children and adults, including:

• Childhood immunizations
• Medical care
• Children's growth and nutritional assessment
• Pregnancy testing
• Blood pressure and blood sugar testing
• Health education
• Assistance with finding a regular doctor

CARMA

Controlling Asthma in the Richmond Metropolitan Area (CARMA) is a unique community collaborative aimed at improving the management of pediatric asthma in our community though various outreach programs. CARMA partners with schools, hospitals, and other organizations to provide local children, teachers, and healthcare professionals with the education and resources needed to support a healthier community.

Cross-Cultural Services

Bon Secours is committed to providing quality and complete healthcare to a culturally diverse population. Our Office of Cross-Cultural Services aims to fulfill this goal by promoting cultural and linguistic education and competence. Our programs include:

• CultureVision. A web-based tool that allows quick access to information based on cultural and/or religiously based differences.

• CareCorps. Offers service opportunities, cross-cultural education, and immersion experiences.
• Cultural Diversity Committee. Sponsors and supports educational activities and social opportunities that advance cultural awareness and celebrate diversity.
• Cultural Transition Support Groups. Small, language-appropriate groups that offer support to people experiencing "culture shock," which can manifest as physical and emotional symptoms.
• For Ladies Only. Offers guidance and support and raises cultural awareness in middle and high school girls through mentorship and after-school programs.

Hope in the Cities

This Richmond-based national network strives to provide a framework for honest dialogue and collaboration among citizen groups. It creates conditions of trust between people of different racial and social backgrounds and divergent political views with the goal of implementing constructive action and offering leadership towards social transformation.

International Hospital for Children

This non-profit humanitarian organization links worldwide pediatric, surgical, diagnostic, and preventive resources to help heal critically ill children in developing countries. The International Hospital for Children also trains indigenous physicians and nurses with the goals of saving children's lives now as well as for years to come.

As a service to our non-English-speaking patients and their families, Bon Secours has made available the Cyracom interpretation phone service. This service is also referred to as the "blue phones" due to their distinctive blue color. They can be found throughout the Bon Secours hospitals and in many on-campus physician offices. Reach Out and Read

A national nonprofit organization, Reach Out and Read promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care. The program encourages parents to read aloud to their young children and gives new books to kids ages 6 months to 5 years to take home and enjoy after each checkup. At Richmond Community Hospital and our Care-A-Van sites, volunteers read to children in the waiting area, transforming an otherwise stressful or boring time into a pleasant experience.

Safe Kids

Safe Kids Worldwide is a global network of organizations whose mission is to prevent accidental childhood injury, a leading killer of children age 14 and younger. More than 450 coalitions in 16 countries work to reduce injuries by educating adults and children, creating safe environments, conducting research, and advocating for effective laws.

Salva Vida

Each year, the Salva Vida Medical Foundation sponsors mission trips to some of the most impoverished countries in our hemisphere. In these locales, Salva Vida physicians, nurses, and surgical professionals perform medical "miracles," offering treatment and surgery to those most in need—help that otherwise would be impossible for these patients to obtain. For young and old alike, the result is a healthier body, new future, and a "saved life."

Since 1998, the Salva Vida Medical Foundation has undertaken week-long mission trips to Haiti, Honduras, and Belize to offer vital medical assistance—and hope—to hundreds of children, men, and women. Surgical teams generally perform as many as 50 to 60 surgeries in one week. A primary care team of five can treat more than 850 patients in just five days.

Predominantly comprised of Bon Secours physicians, nurses, and staff, Salva Vida team members work closely with professionals in host countries to share expertise and resources. At the end of each trip, surplus equipment, supplies, and medications are donated to improve the care that local doctors can offer their communities. Gifts of every size help make Salva Vida mission trips possible and profoundly impact the lives of those whom our medical and surgical teams serve.

Spiritual Care Services

Through our pastoral care staff, we provide Spiritual Care Services that address the spiritual dimensions of illness. These services are available to you and your child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, while in the hospital.

We can:

• Offer sacramental ministry
• Pray with you and your child
• Provide confidential counsel to you and your family
• Connect you with your own clergy or faith community if desired
• Support opportunities for spiritual reflection
• Refer you to appropriate religious resources and other materials
• Assist with advance medical directives
