Bon Secours’ commitment to the Richmond community is unwavering. In January of 2023, we introduced our Community Today, Community Tomorrow: Pathway to Wellness in the East End initiative, which is a three-year plan developed using data gathered from the East End community, for the East End community.
We are now more than halfway through our implementation of this three-year plan and we have made great strides on the four key components of this plan including increasing access to medical services, focusing on wellness and prevention, growing our partnerships with the East End community, and recruiting and training physicians and associates. We have seen that when we come together, we can meet the challenge of improving the health and well-being of the East End community, and we appreciate your ongoing support and partnership.
As we enter year three of the implementation of the Pathway to Wellness in the East End initiative, we will continue posting updates by the 15th of the month following the end of each quarter (April 15th, July 15th, October 15th, January 15th) on this dedicated webpage.

East End Urgent Care 7 Days a Week Bon Secours Urgent Care, East End expanded hours to patients on November 4, 2024. The clinic is now open Sunday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for both adults and children who are experiencing minor illnesses and injuries. Since opening the clinic in July of 2024, we’ve had more than 2,100 patient visits, the majority of those occurring since expanding hours. |

RCH Hosts Free Flu Shot Clinic for Community Richmond Community Hospital offered their annual Free Flu Shot Clinic on October 5, 2024, at the East End Medical Office Building. We administered nearly 60 flu vaccines to East End residents no cost. DeJuan Branch, Pharm.D., director of pharmacy services at Richmond Community Hospital, shares why it is so important to take action and get your flu vaccination. “Getting the flu vaccine on time in the fall is essential to protect yourself and others, and to help prevent early outbreaks during flu season.” |

Seventeen Participants Graduate from Hypertension Management Program with Incredible Results On December 12, 2024, 17 patients and nearly 50 additional family members, friends, and guests attended the Bon Seocurs Hypertension Management Program Graduation at the Robinson Theater. The graduation marked the completion of their year-long participation in the pilot program which provided a multidisciplinary care team including a nurse, pharmacist, Community Health Worker, and dietitian to holistically support patient health. The program also included cooking classes, nutrition workshops in addition to 1-1 dietetic counseling, weekly fresh produce bags and food vouchers, transportation support, and social connections. Bon Secours Seeks Input through its Community Health Needs Assessment Survey
Every 3 years, Bon Secours conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), where we hear from community members that live or work near our 7 hospitals about what they think are the biggest health needs facing our community. The CHNA is a rigorous, federally mandated community engagement process that involves focus groups, town halls, interviews, and a survey. These opportunities to hear from the community help Bon Secours leadership to identify community health needs, pinpointing the most pressing health issues and gaps in services that need to be addressed. They also help us guide our resource allocation, improve health outcomes, and enhance our ongoing community engagement. Our CHNA process is a vital tool to ensure that our Bon Secours services align with community needs and are contributing positively to public health. The survey takes an average of 6-7 minutes to complete.

Bon Secours Hosts Senior Angel Tree Event The Bon Secours Sarah Garland Jones Center hosted our fourth East End Senior Angel Tree event in partnership with Richmond Community Hospital’s Holiday Grand Illumination on December 4, 2024, for community members. In partnership with the Armstrong Renaissance Senior Community, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Rho Eta Omega Chapter, the event featured live musical performances from saxophonist Gregory Amos, a delicious holiday meal, a special guest appearance and holiday pictures with St. Nick, a bingo tournament, and holiday gifts for every attending senior. |
RCH Partners with Shiloh Baptist Church To Collect Donations
Richmond Community Hospital associates partnered with the Community Health Neighborhood Engagement Team for winter donations for one of the Congregational Churches in the East End, Shiloh Baptist Church. The teams collected and donated more than 600 items including winter clothing, hygiene care packages, and laundry detergent. The pastors have been an integral part in finding ways to assist with disparities within the neighborhoods that they serve - and have continued the work of building relationships and assessing the social determinants of health.
Richmond Artist Hamilton Glass partners with Bon Secours to Transform Streets Surrounding Richmond Community Hospital
In November of 2024, Bon Secours received the permits for a mural project involving Richmond Artist Hamilton Glass on the campus of Richmond Community Hospital. This mural project will transform the intersections of Nine Mile Road and 27th Street, as well as U street and 28th Street into colorful areas visually connecting the various buildings across the campus. These mural concepts were developed in conversations with local community representatives, members of the community health team at Bon Secours, as well as patients and staff at Richmond Community Hospital. The artwork is planned for installation in the Spring of 2025.

AmeriCorps Members Complete First Phase of Service on Bon Secours Richmond’s Neighborhood Engagement Team On October 16, 2024, the second cohort of AmeriCorps members completed the first phase of their service on Bon Secours Richmond’s Neighborhood Engagement team through a partnership with the City of Richmond’s Office of Community Wealth Building. Culminating in a presentation to nearly 50 colleagues and community partners, the members shared the results of their project including their own personal reflections on community engagement. During their first phase of service, members engaged more than 100 community residents, created a database of resources, and led an event focused on the social determinants of health. Based on community feedback, they focused on housing, mental health, food access, fitness, and overall wellness. The second phase of their service includes supporting patients in finding resources outside the hospital in partnership with Bon Secours primary care and the emergency department. The program serves as a pipeline for launching AmeriCorps members into full-time careers serving as Community Health Workers. |

Supporting East End Entrepreneurship (SEED) Impact Study Completed For over a decade the Supporting East End Entrepreneurship Development (S.E.E.D.) Program has invested over $1 million in grant funds to small businesses located in the East End and Manchester. In partnership with the Richmond Night Market, Bon Secours completed an Impact Study to learn how the program affected the 50+ recipients in achieving their small business goals. Through one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and surveys, participants celebrated the wonderful ways this program supported keeping their businesses open, allowed for growth and expansion, and helped them to evolve with changes in the community. We were also able to learn how the program can make an even deeper impact in the future, and we are excited to engage community partners including InUnison, Culinary Concepts, Bridging Virginia, Hatch Kitchen, the Metropolitan Business League, and more to expand the program going forward. |
New Café Operator Announced for Bon Secours Sarah Garland Jones Center
Since the Fall of 2024, Bon Secours has been seeking a new café operator to bring into the Sarah Garland Jones Center. We’ve began by having conversations with potential café operators, and later publicly released a request for qualifications (RFQ) to solicit proposals from partners interested in joining the center. As stated in the RFQ, Bon Secours sought for a café partner that would:
- Offer healthy food options and menu items at a price point accessible to all.
- Commit to quality service and food offered within a positive, welcoming environment for all.
- Have a history of strong experience running a profitable, sustainable, food-based business.
- Be locally-owned with a preference for women and minority-owned businesses.
- Hire an inclusive workforce reflective of the diversity of the East End and operate as an equal opportunity employer.
A team of 15+ Bon Secours associates and East End community partners reviewed submissions to help select the next café operator. We are so excited to restore access to this important community gathering place in Spring of 2025. A public announcement will follow in the coming weeks as well as details for a grand opening.

Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital Successfully Partners with St. John’s Church and the Richmond Office of Community Wealth Building to Host the Second Annual East End Career Festival
In November of 2024, Bon Secours partnered with the Office of Community Wealth Building and St. John’s United Holy Church to host our second annual East End Career Festival. This event offered an opportunity for East End residents to learn about health care career training and coaching opportunities that can lead to careers within the Bon Secours ministry. Offerings included free health screenings, touch-a-truck, community resources, as well as opportunities to discuss a variety of career paths in health care and other fields. This was, and will continue to be, a family friendly event for all ages with a kid’s zone as well as food trucks! Thank you to our local celebrity, LiLi, from 106.5 The Beat who was available for meet and greets!
