David Dougherty, MD, FACS

Dr. David Dougherty is board certified in general surgery. He enjoys the full breadth of general surgery and believes in holistic care of the surgical patient. He aims to fully explain surgical disease to patients and their families and strives to be approachable and compassionate.

His interests include robotic and laparoscopic surgery for hernia, gallbladder disease, acid reflux, hiatal hernia, adrenal tumors, and diseases of the small bowel and colon. He also performs operations for thyroid and parathyroid diseases, and for skin and breast cancer.

Dr. Dougherty loves living in Richmond with his wife and 3 children. In his free time, he enjoys coaching his kids’ sports teams and taking them fishing.

G. Broadie Newton, MD, FACS

Dr. Newton attended Duke University for his undergraduate degree. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine located in Houston, Texas, and completed his residency at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Newton is board certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery. His special medical interests include general, vascular and laparoscopic surgery.

Michael J. MacDougall, MD, FACS

Dr. Michael MacDougall attended the University of Wisconsin for his undergraduate degree. He received his medical degree from Duke University and completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. MacDougall is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery.


Dr. MacDougall is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the National Accreditation of Professional Breast Centers. Since 2008, he has been serving as the hospital Cancer Liaison Physician to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. His special medical interests include general, oncologic, breast and laparoscopic surgery.

Amit N. Gogia, MD, FACS

Dr. Amit Gogia received his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio before returning with his family to Richmond. Dr. Gogia is board certified in general surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He performs a full complement of general surgery procedures. He has extensive experience and leads in the development of minimally invasive and robotic assisted surgery for the treatment of hernias and disorders of the gallbladder, thyroid, and colon.

Sophia D. Lee, MD, FACS

Dr. Sophia Lee attended Wellesley College for her undergraduate degree. She received her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She completed her residency and minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine. Dr. Lee is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. Her main area of interest is in advanced laparoscopic and daVinci surgeries, but she does a full spectrum of general surgery cases.
