Anesthesiology
The Anesthesiologists at our facilities provide outstanding anesthetic care for our patients. Our Anesthesiologists care for more than 50,000 patients each year. They are assisted by numerous residents and nurse anesthetists. Among the specialized services provided by our Anesthesiology providers are:

Depending on the procedure, you may be given one of the following types of anesthesia:

Pain Clinic
Experts at our Memorial Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center and St. Mary’s Hospital provide management of acute and chronic pain through special Pain Clinics. These services are designed to restore function and increase the quality of life for patients who experience pain syndromes.

Bariatric Surgery (Surgical Weight loss)
Obesity has become a #1 health concern in our country today with more than half of Americans being categorized as overweight and roughly 12 million of those are considered to be severely obese. Obesity is major cause of premature death and many other medical conditions, including sleep apnea, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and degenerative joint disease.

The American Society for Bariatric Surgery describes these basic approaches that weight loss surgery takes to achieve change. You must discuss with a bariatric specialist which procedure is the right one for you.

Colon and Rectal Surgery
The colon and rectal surgeons affiliated with Bon Secours Richmond offer the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients who suffer from disorders of the colon, rectum and anus. Physicians who specialize in colon and rectal surgery have completed training in general surgery as well as advanced training in the treatment of colon and rectal problems. These surgeons offer a collaborative approach to patient care, working closely with colleagues in other specialties to find the best treatment approach for each patient.

All hospitals feature increasing use of minimally invasive surgery procedures. These procedures use smaller incisions, which result in decreased bleeding, reduced hospital stays and shortened recovery time for patients.

Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Providers in Dental Specialties focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and irregularities involving the teeth, gums and other tissues of the mouth. These specialties provide coordinated care for patients who require specialized dental care including:

• Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
• Orthodontics (treatment of dental and facial irregularities)

Our affiliated oral and maxillofacial surgeons care for patients who experience such conditions as impacted wisdom teeth, facial and TMJ pain and abnormal jaws. We also treat accident victims suffering from facial injuries, offer reconstructive facial surgery and dental facial implant surgery, care for patients with tumors and cysts of the jaws and face, and treat functional and cosmetic conditions of the face.

Eye Surgery
Eye surgery is increasingly popular, both for medical and cosmetic reasons. Our facilities support almost every modern eye surgical technique in use today, including retina laser surgery. Most eye surgeries, including procedures for cataracts and macular degeneration, are offered on an outpatient basis.

• Cataracts – Cloudy vision is a common effect of aging. A condition, called a cataract, occurs when the lens of the eye becomes opaque and prevents clear focus. Symptoms include trouble seeing in bright light, double vision in one eye, fading color and poor night vision. Cataract surgery to implant an artificial lens is the most-performed surgery in the United States. We ‘fast-track’ our cataract patients to get them in and out of surgery in just a few hours. Surgeons make small incisions and use no stitches and the use of a local anesthetic reduces recovery time. The surgery produces very little pain, and in most cases, patients can shed their glasses except for reading.
• Macular Degeneration – This progressive eye disorder stems from damage to the macula, which lies at the back of the retina. Macular degeneration is not reversible, but it may be possible to prevent further deterioration by closing leaking vessels. Typically, the central vision is impaired but peripheral, or side, vision is unaffected.

General surgeons perform consultation and surgery on medical conditions involving the breast, endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract, colon, liver, pancreas and rectum.

Neurological Surgery
The spine, neck and head are all in good hands with care from Neurosurgical Associates. These neurosurgeons have expertise in caring for patients with problems involving the head, spine, cerebrovascular system and peripheral nerves and rely on the newest technologies and procedures to reduce pain, promote healing and speed up recovery. So that our patients have access to a broad range of expertise, our neurosurgeons work closely with other specialists, especially Neurology, Oncology, Neuro-radiology, Orthopedics, Endocrinology and Otorhinolaryngology (ENT). They are aided by highly skilled support staff and state-of-the-art technology and facilities.

Brain Lab™ Technology
As a tool for surgeons who perform complex surgeries of the brain, back, neck and sinuses, we offer computer-guided imagery called Brain Lab™ System. With this technology, surgeons view a three-dimensional image inside a patient's head or sinus cavity and can pinpoint the exact location of surgical instruments. This technology enables the surgeon to navigate areas of the anatomy previously unable to reach. For example, with brain tumor procedures, the surgeon may be able to remove more of the tumor and reduce the amount of surrounding healthy tissue damaged.

Orthopaedic Surgery
Orthopaedics at our Hospitals has a long tradition of excellence and is a leader in the Orthopaedic services we provide. Each year we perform orthopaedic surgical procedures ranging from joint replacement, spinal surgery, sports medicine to repair of fractures. Our orthopaedic surgeons utilize state-of-the-art equipment in our operating rooms.

Our orthopaedic unit has a dedicated staff of highly trained orthopaedic nurses. Our low nurse to patient ratios allow our nurses to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our patients. This is what we consider “Complete Health.“

Physicians from Advanced Orthopaedics, Tuckahoe Orthopaedics and West End Orthopaedics staff our hospitals.

Most of our patients go home when discharged. Occasionally, patients will be referred to a rehabilitation facility after discharge for more intensive physical and occupational therapy.

Our team of healthcare professionals is experienced and trained to address the special needs of spinal surgery patients. We work collaboratively to provide comprehensive care to our patients. It is our goal to assist in coordinating your surgical experience from pre-admission to your return home.

Pediatric Surgery
Pediatric surgeons are primarily concerned with the diagnosis, pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of surgical problems in children. In addition to completing training and achieving board certification in general surgery, pediatric surgeons complete two additional years of training exclusively in children’s surgery. They then receive special certification in the subspecialty of pediatric surgery. Neonatologists, pediatricians and family physicians will recognize conditions that need surgery. Our Pediatric surgeons work with a team of neonatologists, pediatricians and/or family physicians involved in a child’s medical care, to determine whether surgery is the best option for the child.

At St. Mary's Hospital, we offer full-scale children's health services including a children's emergency center, pediatric unit and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Both pediatric units are locked areas, kept secure at all times and staffed with nurses trained to treat young patients.

The PICU is an eight-bed unit staffed by intensivists, physicians specially trained in critical care. A national shortage of intensivists makes it imperative that parents pay attention to PICU staffing. Critically ill and injured children from newborns to young adults are cared for in this advanced unit.

Our focus is the health of the children we care for, but we make every effort to accommodate parents by providing overnight cots, beverages and snacks since having a child in the hospital can be very difficult.
