The opening of a brand new state of the art hospital, St. Francis Medical Center, has created a unique opportunity for Bon Secours Health System. A growing medical practice has been combined with an established residency program to create a new family medicine residency. The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) affiliated St. Francis Family Medicine Residency Program opened its doors in August, 2005. The program has received full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Utilizing the curriculum and the 32 years’ experience of the Blackstone Family Practice Residency, Bon Secours and VCU have built a quality educational program that will serve western Chesterfield county and surrounding areas in suburban Richmond, Virginia. Faculty will include a mixture of rural and suburban-based academicians and clinicians. Subspecialty preceptors are drawn from a premier network of Bon Secours affiliated physicians.
The residency program is housed in a new facility, built specifically for the needs of resident education and efficient clinical care. The clinic is located less than 15 minutes from the new hospital, which opened in September, 2005. New residents will have the opportunity to rotate through the largest Bon Secours Richmond facility, St. Mary's Hospital. In March of 2006, most inpatient rotations began to occur in the new hospital. Outpatient rotations include four weeks of rural medicine training at Blackstone Family Practice Center in each of the 2nd and 3rd years.
