As a not-for-profit hospital serving the greater Richmond community, Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center relies on volunteers to provide a wide range of services. Volunteering at St. Francis Medical Center provides a unique experience filled with fellowship, camaraderie and the satisfaction of being good help to those in need.

Volunteer opportunities include:

Administration receptionist. Provide phone support and directional information in Administration on an on call basis. Assist with mail distribution and clerical assistance to staff as needed

Ambulatory Surgery Center assistant. Make beds, stock supplies and bring blankets to patients as needed in recovery room. Put together charts and help with light clerical tasks.

Cancer Center Information Desk. Give directional information to Cancer Center visitors.  Answer telephone with general information or direct call to appropriate department

Cancer Institute Resource Librarian. Assist patients, visitors and medical staff with locating and checking out library resources.  Log resources checked in and out. File returned material appropriately. Maintain and restock free pamphlets and brochures.  Assist patients and visitors with audiovisual equipment and computers.

Diabetes Treatment center Office Assistant. Provide office/clerical support to the Program.

Emergency Dept Hospitality Associate *. Escort patients to exam rooms. Visit patients in exam rooms to assist with getting them items such as blankets, beverages, etc. Deliver items to patient rooms. Communicate to staff the needs of patients. Re-stock food and medical supplies. Make stretchers.

Eucharistic Ministers. Trained Eucharistic Ministers serve communion to and talk with Catholic patients.

General Services. Provide a variety of services throughout the hospital. Provide assistance on an “as needed” basis to departments, nursing stations and labs. Discharge and transport patients as requested. Deliver documents, flowers, mail and equipment to areas throughout the hospital.

Gift Shop Sales Associates*. Provide assistance to customers in St. Francis Gift Shop, take phone orders and make deliveries to patients.

General Surgery PACU Assistant. Make beds, stock supplies and bring blankets to patients as needed in recovery room. Put together charts and help with light clerical tasks. Restock medical supplies in drawers.

Medical Records Assistant*. Filing and other clerical support.

Main Information Desk*. Provide hospital visitors and callers with directional service and patient information.

Pet Therapy Visitors. Caring Canine members and their certified dogs visit patients on 4th and 5th floors each Weds afternoon. This program help patients relax and de-stress, and supports the recovery process.

Security Office Assistant*. Take photo IDs for new employees and volunteers in Security office. Assist with other clerical duties.

Surgery Waiting Center information desk. Provide directional/instructional information to patients and families waiting for surgery patients. Provide directional information to the general public

Unit Assistant*. Visit patients on all three patient units (Med Surg, Ortho, PCU) and find out their needs. Assist with getting them items such as blankets, beverages, etc. Deliver items to patient rooms. Re-stock supplies as needed. Other tasks as requested by staff.

*Evening/Weekend opportunities are available.
