Neurosciences Center to be located at Reynolds Crossing Campus

Bon Secours Richmond Health System announced today that Timothy J. Shephard, Ph.D., will lead the Health system’s Neurosciences Institute. Dr. Shephard, who holds bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in nursing, served as program designer in the development of the neuroscience/stroke program at St. Mary’s Hospital.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Shephard’s caliber as director of our Neuroscience Institute,” said Peter J. Bernard, CEO of Bon Secours Richmond Health System. “The Institute houses the many important inpatient and outpatient services related to neurological services at Bon Secours. Dr. Shephard specializes in services relative to quality of life, long-term outcomes and clinical research – all important aspects of our care of patients with neurological health issues.”

The Bon Secours Neurosciences Institute, which encompasses all four hospitals in the Bon Secours Richmond Health System, will have its main location on the Reynolds Crossing campus of St. Mary’s Hospital. Components of the Neurosciences Institute include the Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center, neuro-rehabilitation services, the Pain Management Center, Sleep Disorder Laboratory, an education center and several neurology and neurosurgery practices.

The scope of the Institute is broad including a state-of-the-art science stroke system based on research and established national guidelines. It is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

“The Institute at Bon Secours is grounded not only in excellent care and services, but in compassionate care, the mission of Bon Secours,” Dr. Shephard said. “I look forward to taking this already strong program and expanding its capabilities and capacity to serve even more residents of Central Virginia.”

Shephard received his bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind., his master’s degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his doctoral degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

The Neurosciences Institute is one of Bon Secours Richmond’s Institutes of Excellence. Others include the Cancer Institute, the Heart Institute and the Orthopaedics Institute.
