Women’s Pelvic Health Rehabilitation Program

The Women’s Pelvic Health Rehabilitation Program at Bon Secours St. Francis Therapy Centers was developed to address conditions and issues that are unique to the pelvic region. A woman’s body goes through many changes during a lifetime, and weakness or injury to muscles in the pelvic floor can cause health issues for women of all ages.

The group of muscles in the pelvic floor help to support our organs and allow us to properly perform bladder and bowel functions. The pelvic floor can be affected by aging, childbirth, posture, or injury. This dysfunction can result in urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, or pain with intercourse.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can be treated successfully with physical therapy. Bon Secours St. Francis Therapy Centers is committed to providing excellent quality pelvic floor therapy with state-of-the-art technology.

What to Expect at the First Visit

Your first visit will consist of a one-hour evaluation. You are welcome to bring someone with you if it would make you feel more comfortable. The interview process discusses past medical history, including surgical and obstetric history. Additional focus will include questions regarding bladder and bowel function, sexual function, and pain in relationship to the genitourinary and colorectal systems. With your consent, the vaginal and/or rectal area will be observed externally as well as internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles. A comprehensive evaluation of the back and lower extremities may also be assessed.

The physical therapist will provide education of the anatomy of the pelvic floor and your specific condition. Specific techniques will be discussed to help you manage your condition at home. Exercises for the pelvic floor will be issued as well as written material addressing the muscular dysfunction. A bowel and bladder diary may be sent home with you to provide guidelines for modification in future visits. By the end of the session, you will have an individualized plan of care to improve your condition.
