Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital (RCH) is an urban hospital with 104 beds including an emergency department, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services, a medical / progressive care unit, surgical services and a full imaging department located in Richmond’s East End.

Richmond Community Hospital was founded more than 100 years ago under the vision of Sarah Garland Jones, MD, the first Black woman licensed to practice medicine in Virginia, who brought together a group of like-minded physicians to establish Richmond Community Hospital as Richmond’s first Black-owned hospital in 1907. The hospital operated as a full-service care provider for patients of all races, and a teaching facility for Black nurses at a time when few such options existed. Relocating to Overbrook Road in the 1930s, the hospital moved again in 1980 to its current location with personal financial investment from 21 doctors. Those doctors each made significant financial and time commitments to build the hospital on Nine Mile Road where it remains today.

Bon Secours acquired Richmond Community Hospital in 1995 and continued the good work at RCH through the expansion of emergency services and meaningful community outreach — opening an emergency department to provide immediate access to care, distributing grants annually to dozens of local nonprofit organizations including the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, and Maggie Walker Community Land Trust. Bon Secours’ Supporting East End Entrepreneurship Development Program (SEED) continues to invest in the growth of the East End through the financial support of over 40 East End entrepreneurs and small businesses.

In 2023, Bon Secours opened a $16.5 million East End Medical Office Building that houses a walk-in health & wellness clinic and a groundbreaking behavioral health partial hospitalization program. Projects that will continue to improve access and care are underway, including the build-out of a new $4.5 million MRI suite. This expansion will ensure patients of the East End community access to the newest MRI technology within Bon Secours’ Richmond market, while also improving the patient experience with the expansion of the main lobby and outpatient patient registration area.

Currently, the hospital is undergoing a campus-wide beautification project which includes the renovation of the hospital chapel, upgrades to the exterior lighting, paint and landscaping, new signage and artwork, and the establishment of a community garden. Over the next three years, Bon Secours will operationalize its Community Today, Community Tomorrow: Pathway to Wellness in the East End plan, which will increase access to medical services, focus on wellness and prevention, grow community partnerships, and recruit and train physicians and associates as part of this plan.
