Program Overview
Established in 2009, our ASHP-accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency program incorporates learning experiences across multiple Bon Secours sites, with Memorial Regional Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospital serving as primary sites. These community hospitals are valued members of the Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) health care system, a Catholic-based hospital system with locations in seven states and internationally. As a not-for-profit organization, Bon Secours Mercy Health upholds five central values: human dignity, integrity, compassion, stewardship and service.
The mission of our program is to empower aspiring pharmacy practitioners to become leaders in patient-centered care through immersive clinical experiences, interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to continuous professional development. By fostering a culture of excellence, compassion and innovation, we strive to shape well-rounded pharmacists who are dedicated to improving health care outcomes and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the patients and communities we serve.
We embody this mission throughout the residency year, with provision of comprehensive learning experiences and mentorship. Our residents receive comprehensive training and develop competence in a wide range of areas, including acute and ambulatory patient care, leadership and management, as well as teaching, education and knowledge dissemination. These skills are honed through diverse learning experiences, meaningful and impactful projects, and the fulfillment of practical staffing requirements throughout the course of the program.
Rotation opportunities are available at Bon Secours Mercy Health ambulatory care and outpatient pharmacy sites and at four of the Bon Secours Mercy Health hospitals in the Richmond, Va., area:
- St. Mary’s Hospital: 391-licensed bed hospital in Richmond, Va.
- Memorial Regional Medical Center: 269-licensed bed hospital in Mechanicsville, Va.
- St. Francis Medical Center: 130-licensed bed hospital in Midlothian, Va.
- Richmond Community Hospital: 104-licensed bed hospital in Richmond, Va.
