Bereavement Center Opportunities

At the Bon Secours Bereavement Center, we understand that the death of a loved is often a painful, lonely experience, which is why we offer bereavement care. It’s our honor to support people in working through the death of those closest to them and provide support when it’s most needed.

One of our most important – and effective – efforts involves sponsoring eight week grief support groups throughout the year. These groups are for those who have lost a loved one between three and thirteen months ago, and want support as they go through the grieving process. We offer daytime and evening groups, which are free and offered on the North and South sides of the James River. Groups are small, informal and caring, and are led by Masters-level bereavement professionals. Group participants may share thoughts and concerns, knowing that others will respect their feelings and understand their needs. While sharing is encouraged, no one is pressured to speak. Often, group members find that simply being in a warm, compassionate environment and hearing others’ similar struggles and gains helps them feel better.

In addition, we offer monthly workshops. These provide a safe setting where professionals can assist participants who want to learn more about the grief process. After some teaching on a grief issue, group dialog is encouraged and information about upcoming programs is shared.

Our grief counselors provide confidential and free counseling for all ages for Bon Secours families. Non-Bon Secours families are provided with helpful information and referrals to similar community services.

Bon Secours also holds a memorial service twice a year in the Spring and Fall at St. Mary’s Hospital Chapel. These celebrate and honor the death of loved ones and provide hope for ones’ journey forward.

Our bereavement services allow us to continue Bon Secours’ longstanding tradition of “good help” to those in need. We encourage anyone who has lost a loved in the past year to consider contacting us for support. Doing so links you with another, healthy means of handling your grief while also honoring the memory and love that you have shared.
