Pediatric Emergency Medicine

When you take your child to the emergency department, it can be a frightening experience for both you and your child. Your child is in a strange new environment and, in many cases, may have a serious injury. And you are meeting a new doctor at a stressful time. That is why in our new Pediatric Emergency Department at St. Mary’s Hospital, our pediatric emergency medicine physicians do their utmost to relieve your stress and make your child feel more comfortable while he or she is being treated. A pediatric emergency physician is a medical doctor who has specialized in the acute care of very ill or injured infants, babies, children and teens. This type of doctor has received specialized training in emergency medicine and pediatrics, in addition to his or her regular medical education.

Along with skilled nurses and other health care professionals in the emergency departments of the Bon Secours hospitals, our emergency medicine physicians provide compassionate, comprehensive care to infants, children and adolescents with urgent medical, surgical and traumatic conditions, including:

  • Medical problems that come on suddenly (such as fever, infection and severe allergic reactions)
  • Major injuries (such as burns, fractures and head injuries)
  • Minor injuries (such as cuts and sprains)
  • Complications of chronic illnesses
  • Poisonings and overdoses
