Baltimore, Maryland—Bon Secours Baltimore Health System and Kaiser Permanente’s Future Baltimore initiative, an innovative neighborhood revitalization plan that will advance health equity and economic opportunity in West Baltimore, received a $500,000 gift on Wednesday, Dec. 12 from Bank of America. The $500,000 will support the construction of a community resource center, which will include a financial well-being center for residents in West Baltimore.

“For decades, West Baltimore communities have faced long-standing disinvestment and socioeconomic and racial disparities in health and income. Bon Secours partnered with Kaiser Permanente to launch Future Baltimore, which demonstrates both organizations’ acceptance of the challenge to spur revitalization for the neighborhoods in the 21223 zip code,” said CEO, Samuel Ross, M.D., from Bon Secours. “Bank of America’s gift will allow Future Baltimore to reach more community members with access to programs and services, resources and support.”

The cornerstone of the Future Baltimore project is the state-of-the-art community resource center. Bon Secours and Kaiser Permanente will renovate the abandoned Payson Street -/media at 31 S. Payson Street.  With 18,820 sq. ft. of space for programming, the center will serve 3,000 children and adults annually. The financial well-being area in the center will carry the Bank of America name and will allow Bon Secours to expand its financial services program, which has an effective coaching model focused on education and client engagement.

“At Bank of America, we’re helping build thriving communities through local organizations that have the power to address issues fundamental to economic health and ultimately supporting long-term sustainable growth,” said Sabina Kelly, Greater Maryland market president, Bank of America. “The Future Baltimore renovation project is truly a collaborative effort to improve education and economic prosperity in our community.”

“We are proud of our partnership with Bon Secours. It is an honor to work together to create better health and life opportunities for residents in West Baltimore, “ said Jill Feldon, vice president of communications and community engagement for Kaiser Permanente. “We are committed to this work because we know that good health is about more than clinical care—it is intrinsically tied to many social and economic factors as well. We are energized and grateful to see other prominent organizations like Bank of America, join us in the effort to move Baltimore forward through Future Baltimore.”

Future Baltimore is a flagship partnership between Bon Secours and Kaiser Permanente that is dedicated to and focused on addressing the social, economic and health needs of community members who live in three neighborhoods in the 21223 zip code: Fayette Street Outreach, Boyd Booth and Franklin Square. Future Baltimore brings new and expanded programs including job training and a transition program for people released from incarceration to the area to meet the needs of the residents from the West Baltimore neighborhoods.
