Bon Secours announced that Shane Knisley has been named president of Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, effective March 13. Knisley is pleased to return to Hampton Roads, where he formerly lived, after serving in the health system’s Cincinnati market since 2018.
In his new role, Knisley will be responsible for the overall operational success of Maryview Medical Center, while focusing on compassionate, quality patient care. Knisley brings to his new position more than 30 years of health care leadership experience – with much of it being spent in the U.S. Navy.
At just 17 years old, Knisley enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Over his career, he would forge an incredible path in health care, leading to being commissioned as an officer with the Navy’s Medical Service Corps.
This Navy experience provided Knisley with his first health care job – a hospital corpsman, where he spent the first nine years of his career. This role culminated in Okinawa, Japan, where Shane served as a field corpsman with the Marines.
Shane retired in 2014, ending his military service with a total of more than 23 years, including nearly 15 years in health care administrator positions.
“Shane’s military background, plus the work ethic and problem-solving his decades of service instilled in him, make him a natural fit to lead the Maryview team,” said Pat Davis-Hagens, president of Bon Secours – Hampton Roads market. “While Shane has been exposed to the health care delivery system throughout the world, he also has the benefit of building upon a firm foundation of excellence over his five years with the ministry.”
Knisley first joined the health system in 2018 as the chief operating officer of Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Most recently and prior to his role at Maryview, Knisley served as president of Mercy Health – Clermont Hospital in Cincinnati. During his time there, he demonstrated his ability as a hospital administrator by forging excellent relationships with patients, associates and the community.
“It’s an honor to continue my service to this ministry in a new capacity in Hampton Roads and work with our physicians, associates and community partners to serve the distinct needs of our patients both in and around Portsmouth,” Knisley said. “It feels like a very a natural fit for me: providing patients with incredible health care in a region filled with those who have worn, and wear, the cloth of our nation. I am delighted to return to the area and continue to lead the effort of meeting the changing needs of the communities we serve.”
As the only civilian hospital in the City of Portsmouth, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center is a full-service, 346-bed hospital, offering a comprehensive open heart surgery program, bariatric and orthopedic surgery programs on dedicated units. It was recognized as a Top Teaching Hospital in 2021 by The Leapfrog Group.
Knisley, who has relocated to Norfolk, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in information systems management from the University of Maryland University College in College Park and his Master of Health Administration degree from Army – Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He is also a graduate of the Marine Corps College of Command and Staff in Quantico, Va.
