Bon Secours Seeks Input from Richmond Residents for Community Health Needs Assessment

Richmond, Va. (October 8, 2024) – Bon Secours Richmond is conducting its triennial community health needs assessment (CHNA) survey of residents within the immediate and surrounding areas of its community hospitals: Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico, Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Hanover, Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital in Richmond, Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Chesterfield, Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, Bon Secours Southern Virginia Medical Center in Emporia and Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital in the Northern Neck.

The survey will help Bon Secours identify the areas of greatest need in the Richmond market where the not-for-profit health system can work to improve the health of the community. The assessment is available online for residents of the 24 immediate and surrounding counties and cities where the majority of Bon Secours’ patients reside. Non-residents who work, live, play or worship in the region are also invited to participate and to select the locality that best represents their connection to this region. The survey kicked off in September 2024 and will run until February 2024.

The 20-question survey features general questions as well as specific questions designed to collect opinions on the top health needs of the communities Bon Secours serves. It is an anonymous survey – the data is organized only by city/county and ZIP code – and takes less than 10 minutes on average to complete. Community members can access the survey online in both English and Spanish. Along with input from local health departments, social services, school systems, community safety net providers and local governments, the survey contributes to an overall snapshot of the community and informs Bon Secours of the areas in which to focus efforts and resources for the next three years.

“At Bon Secours we recognize that social drivers of health impact the overall health of communities. As an anchor institution, by ensuring people have access to essential needs like affordable housing, healthy food, and opportunities for education, we are able to help strengthen the health of both individuals and communities in the areas we serve,” said Becky Clay Christensen, executive director of Community Health for Bon Secours Richmond. “That’s why we want to hear directly from the patients and residents in our areas, so we can appropriately identify those key areas of need and make strategic investments over the next several years to make our community even stronger. Please allow your voice to be heard.”

The most recent CHNA, which was completed in 2022, cited the following five areas as significant health needs in the communities Bon Secours serves: chronic disease and prevention, engagement and inclusion, mental health, social and economic disparity, and violence and trauma. Bon Secours has worked diligently throughout the last several years to address these concerns through the execution of a three-year CHNA Implementation Plan, which detailed specific actions the health system would take to address these identified areas of health need. Some of that work includes opening the Community Health Clinic in Manchester for the uninsured and underinsured; convening town halls and hosting community-focused events to improve connectedness; expanding access to mental health services with partial hospitalization programs; investing more than $3 million to address economic equality, affordable housing, education, workforce development and the built environment; and expanding the Bon Secours Violence Response Team to service the Petersburg and Tri-Cities area.
