During ultrasound, or sonography, high frequency sound waves are exposed to specific areas of the body to produce images of the body’s internal structure. Ultrasound can be used to image the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, uterus (fetus), and thyroid. Ultrasound can also view and measure blood flow within an organ or part of the body. It can also be used to evaluate symptoms and causes of pain, swelling, and infections.
