Overview
No one ever imagines themselves having a stroke, let alone preparing for one. If the unthinkable ever happens to you or a loved one, Bon Secours is here for you from the earliest stages to rehabilitation and beyond.
A stroke is a sudden interruption of the blood supply to the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain gets blocked, causing cells to lose oxygen and die. Strokes affect your vascular (heart) and neurological (brain) systems and can require both cardiac care and neurology care for successful treatment.
There are two types of strokes:
- Ischemic strokes block an artery that leads to the brain.
- Hemorrhagic strokes happen when an aneurysm bursts, causing bleeding in and around the brain.
Another type of stoke, called a transient ischemic stroke, or mini stoke, is caused by a temporary clot.
If you or a loved one is having a stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not drive yourself or your loved one to a hospital. Call 9-1-1 so you get expert emergency care on the way to the hospital. Every minute counts.
A stoke can be a life-threatening event, so get help as soon as possible. The longer you or a loved one go without help, the higher the chance of permanent disability. However, If you get to a hospital quickly and receive the right treatment, you have a much better chance at a smooth recovery.
