We are here to help.
The Bon Secours Violence Response Team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In case of an emergency, please go to the nearest Bon Secours Richmond Emergency Department. The Bon Secours Violence Response Team is made up of specially trained forensic nurses and victim services advocates that are available at all Bon Secours Richmond hospitals and freestanding emergency departments. These specialists provide care to anyone who has experienced:
· Sexual abuse
· Physical abuse
· Strangulation
· Domestic violence/Intimate partner violence
· Human trafficking
· Child abuse and neglect
· Elder abuse and neglect
· Workplace violence
When responding to a call, a forensic nurse and victim services advocate respond in tandem to victims of violence. These two roles are complementary: together, they offer comprehensive care including specialized medical attention, evidence collection, emotional support, advocacy support, hospital accompaniment, follow-up phone calls and referrals for community resources.
What should you do?
You can get help 24 hours a day, seven days a week by visiting one of Bon Secours’ emergency departments (EDs). When you arrive, ask to speak with a member of the Violence Response Team (VRT). After asking to see a VRT member you can expect the following:
· You will be seen by the ED staff and receive treatment for any emergent medical needs that you may be experiencing.
· The forensic nurse and victim advocate will be consulted by the ED staff.
· The forensic nurse and advocate will come to the ED to share information about your options for evaluation, collection of evidence, documentation of injuries including photographs and reporting.
· We have a dedicated location within the health system where you will receive one-on-one supportive care in a safe and comfortable space.
· The forensic nurse and advocate will talk with you about what that brought you to the hospital, which helps our team develop a plan of care with you.
Discussion topics may include:
· Evidence collection and photography
· Screening for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy risks
· Medications to prevent sexually transmitted infections
· Referrals to additional resources such as counseling
· Review of any medications given and discharge instructions
· Information on any additional services you wish to discuss.
