Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care

When your child is sick, you want to do everything you can to make him or her feel better. This can become even more important – and more challenging – when your child is faced with a serious or life-threatening illness. Pediatric palliative care is provided concurrently with disease-directed and life-extending efforts. The goal is to help children and families who face critical illness to be fully informed and empower them to face their illness with courage, dignity and hope.

Serving Children and Their Families for Over Twenty Years

Noah’s Children was established in 1997 as the first nonprofit, licensed pediatric hospice and palliative care program in central Virginia. In an effort to continue to offer and expand the services provided to the community, Noah’s Children became a program of Bon Secours Richmond Health System in September 2007. Noah’s Children offers compassionate, high-quality interdisciplinary care for children with progressive, life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and includes medical, emotional, spiritual and practical support for the child and his or her family.

Interdisciplinary Team

The interdisciplinary team of palliative care professionals provides a child-focused, family-centered plan of care based on the family’s concerns, fears, wishes and hopes. The team includes board-certified palliative care pediatricians, pediatric nurses, social workers, chaplains and bereavement counselors, all trained through an End-of-Life Nursing Education Curriculum. Volunteers are also part of the team. The primary goal of palliative care is to enhance the quality of life for the child and family by addressing the pain and symptom distress, whether secondary to physical, emotional, social, or practical distress.

Referral and Eligibility

Family, friends and health care providers may refer patients. We work with all pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists in the community. The primary care pediatrician (PCP) is always welcome to participate with the interdisciplinary team in defining the plan of care.

Other Services

Noah’s Children provides illness and bereavement support services to all family members of children in our program.

Other services include:

  • Volunteer support for families
  • Several direct patient and family supportive services
  • Help with complex decision-making, advance directives and determination of the goals of care
  • Education for the patient and family to promote understanding of the underlying disease process and prognosis
  • Help for families with transitions from home to hospital and hospital to home
  • Perinatal palliative care and support

The Hospice and Palliative Care services provided by Noah’s Children, in partnership with the health care professionals of Bon Secours Richmond Health System, can make a big difference in your child’s quality of life. Programs like this have been shown to provide the best care possible for serious illness, reduce pain and other symptoms, increase patient and family satisfaction and ease the transition between hospitals and other health care settings and health care providers.
