Bon Secours volunteers make a difference in the lives of others – whether they work with families, visitors, community members, or those behind the scenes.

There are three different facilities within Bon Secours Hampton Roads that community members can volunteer at:

  • Mary Immaculate Hospital – Newport News, Virginia
  • Maryview Medical Center – Portsmouth, Virginia
  • Southampton Medical Center – Franklin, Virginia

Volunteers play a crucial role in the function and teamwork at Bon Secours Hampton Roads facilities and are considered a valuable resource and an asset to our job of caring for the sick. Our Bon Secours volunteers make a difference in the lives of others and play a vital role in supporting our mission of providing "Good Help To Those In Need." For that reason, a volunteer at Bon Secours is expected to be the kind of person who has the desire to be of service to others, shows compassion for others, and shows patience in all situations.

Our three volunteer programs accept applicants over the age of 18 for our Adult Volunteer programs, and each facility also offers a flexible Student/Junior Volunteer program, which would include high school and college students, wanting a short-term volunteer commitment.

Volunteer at Bon Secours
At Bon Secours, we expect that all our applicants should be sincerely committed to helping others, dependable, and able to work independently because of the very demanding nature of healthcare.

To apply for an adult volunteer position, you must be at least 18 years of age and graduated from high school. If you are under the age of 18 or in college and interested in a short-term volunteer opportunity, you may be eligible for our Student/Junior Volunteer program.

**If you are interested in the Student/Junior Volunteer program please click on the “Junior Volunteer Programs” link under the “Volunteer in Hampton Roads” link on the left side column of this page to read the information and follow the directions.

How do I apply?
To apply for the Bon Secours Adult Volunteer Service, please complete the following steps. This process may vary per hospital:

For those wanting to be an adult Volunteer at Maryview, review the Volunteer Handbook.

The information provided in the Volunteer Handbook outlines information that will prepare you to actively volunteer. You can review the handbooks below. They will be discussed during the interview process.

Maryview Medical Handbook

Complete the Online Application.
The online volunteer application should be submitted before scheduling an interview. Once you click the “Continue” button at the end of the form, the application is automatically submitted to Volunteer Services. Our application reviewing process takes approximately 1-2 weeks. We will be in contact via email with a suggested date for an interview.

Attend an Interview.
Prospective volunteers will be invited to an interview.

After the interview, you may be required to:

Submit to a Criminal Background Check.

Undergo a Tuberculosis Skin Test (aka PPD).
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Center for Disease Control require healthcare volunteers to have two Tuberculosis (PPD) skin tests before beginning volunteering. The TB skin tests are free if provided at the facility where you want to volunteer. Details and instructions will be given after acceptance into the program.

Have a flu shot prior to or during flu season.

Complete the Volunteer Orientation.

Commit your Time.
The Volunteer Services program involves a serious commitment of time and dedication from each volunteer. Being an Adult Volunteer requires a year-round commitment. Therefore, we ask all applicants to be prepared to volunteer a minimum of one 4-hour shift once a week or a total of 100-170 hours per year, depending on the location (excluding Pet Therapist and Eucharistic Ministers). You are encouraged to thoughtfully consider this commitment prior to applying. Volunteer positions are based on the needs of the hospital.

Purchase and Wear a Uniform.
Please note, our Hampton Roads facilities do not offer volunteer opportunities to satisfy mandated court-appointed service requirements.
