Mission and Vision for the Program
At Bon Secours St. Francis Internal Medicine Residency we are committed to providing a high-quality training program that emphasizes resident well-being, intentional education and personal mentoring. We are equipping the next generation of internists with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver compassionate, evidence-based and patient-centered care to diverse populations that reflect the communities we serve. Our goal is to train and develop physicians committed to the ministry of medicine who will work to infuse the Upstate of South Carolina and surrounding regions with an additional generation of highly skilled internists who enjoy their craft.
Our Hospital System
Bon Secours Mercy Health is a not-for-profit Catholic health system headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio with 50 hospitals in the US and Ireland. Our acute care facilities are located primarily in Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia.
Our local hospital system made of Bon Secours St Francis, Bon Secours Eastside Hospital, Bon Secours – St. Francis Simpsonville Emergency Center and our St. Francis Cancer Center provide care services across the lifespan as well as a combined surgical volume of nearly 20,000 surgeries per year.

Program Overview
Bon Secours St. Francis has received initial accreditation for 36 categorical internal medicine residents, admitting 12 each year starting in 2024. Our program is dedicated to cultivating fulfilled leaders who are prepared to address health care disparities and to develop adaptable physicians capable of meeting the evolving needs of diverse, underserved and aging populations. We are committed to providing a high-quality training program that emphasizes resident well-being, education and mentoring, equipping the next generation of internists with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver compassionate, evidence-based and patient-centered care.
Our program aims to:
- Provide a complete training experience, emphasizing unwavering commitment to clinical excellence in patient care, in order to produce clinically strong doctors.
- Foster residents’ sense of inquiry, ensuring residents stay updated with the latest advancements in health care delivery, and to incorporate evidence-based practices into clinical decision-making processes.
- Establish partnerships with agents/agencies that are serving, raising awareness of, providing exposure to and taking ownership in addressing health care disparities. Furthermore, retain the physicians we train to continue to heal our community.
- Identify, recruit and involve faculty that have demonstrated mentorship qualities, value resident well-being, provide compassionate patient care and have a passion for educating residents.
- Identify opportunities for interdisciplinary training, prioritize initiatives or opportunities for collaboration and foster experiences that equip residents with the skills to work in partnership with other health care professionals as advocates for holistic patient-centered care.
