Welcome From the Program Director

Welcome to the newly established Bon Secours St. Francis Internal Medicine Residency Program in Greenville, South Carolina!  We are thrilled to introduce you to our comprehensive and supportive training program that emphasizes both clinical excellence and professional growth.

Our program is designed to build a strong foundation in internal medicine while prioritizing resident well-being through systems that promote effective time management and work-life balance. With regular check-ins and personalized support from our program director and associate program director, we are committed to creating a nurturing and adaptable learning environment where you can thrive. Our dedicated faculty are passionate about teaching, advising and mentoring, ensuring you receive guidance from experienced professionals who are fully invested in your development –whether your path leads to a career in internal medicine or subspecialty training after graduation. We are here to support you every step of the way!

We offer comprehensive clinical training across all major subspecialties, preparing residents to become highly skilled physicians capable of excelling in any setting. With exposure to a diverse patient population that spans urban, suburban and rural communities, you will encounter a wide range of medical conditions and high-acuity cases. Our state-of-the-art facilities – which include nearly 40 ICU beds and specialized services such as open-heart surgery, advanced GI procedures and a comprehensive cancer center – provide an ideal setting for training in complex care. We are dedicated to fostering your sense of inquiry, encouraging you to stay abreast of the latest advancements in healthcare and to integrate evidence-based practices into your clinical decision-making.

Inaugural Class

Being part of an inaugural residency class offers a unique opportunity for both professional and personal growth. As a member of the PGY1 cohort, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the program’s foundation, contributing to its development and setting standards for future residents. This position allows you to work closely with the founding program director, associate program director and core faculty to create and refine curriculum components, establish clinical protocols and influence the program’s culture from the ground up.

You’ll benefit from a highly collaborative environment where your feedback and ideas directly impact the evolution of the residency program. You’ll have the chance to engage in innovative training approaches, participate in shaping institutional policies and establish best practices that will benefit future residents. Additionally, being part of the inaugural class offers networking opportunities, allowing you to build strong relationships with mentors, peers and industry leaders.
This experience provides a platform for developing leadership skills, participating in unique research and quality improvement projects and contributing to the academic and clinical excellence of the program. Marc Ciesco, DO
Marc Ciesco, DO | Program Director

Medical School: Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Ciesco is a distinguished leader in medical education and practice, currently serving as the discipline co-chair of internal medicine at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, S.C. since October of 2022. In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Ciesco was honored as the VCOM Preceptor of the Year at the VCOM-Carolinas Campus in 2021. He is also active on the Bon Secours St. Francis Sepsis and Mortality Committees and the Carolina Campus Curriculum Committee.

In addition to his academic role, Dr. Ciesco practices hospital medicine at Bon Secours Mercy Health in Greenville, S.C, managing complex patient care and fostering effective interdisciplinary collaboration.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Ciesco enjoys practicing Songahm Tae Kwon Do, creative writing, hiking, camping and long-distance running.

Associate Program Director

Katherine Lumpkin, DO
Katherine Lumpkin, DO

Medical School: Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Residency: University of South Carolina, Greenville Hospital System 

Dr. Lumpkin took her first role as a hospitalist at Bon Secours in 2012. She has been involved in bedside teaching medical students rotating in the inpatient internal medicine rotations as well as offering one-on-one table rounds and teaching time for VCOM medical students. 

She continues to maintain her OMM skills by teaching osteopathic technique lectures for the VCOM third and fourth year students who do their rotations at St. Francis. She has worked in hospitalist medicine, hospice and palliative care, outpatient medicine as a primary care physician in multiple models including value-based care models such and direct primary care models. She has also worked in long-term care having worked in multiple LTAC facilities as well as correctional medicine in the Florida Department of Corrections and Greenville County Jail. She has served as a medical director for home health agencies, multiple hospice companies and has also worked in the medicolegal sector as a malpractice consultant.
